<h1>Authorize access to REST APIs with OAuth 2.0</h1>
Azure DevOps Services
The following guidance is intended for Azure DevOps Services users, since OAuth 2.0 is not supported on Team Foundation Server or Azure DevOps Server. Client Libraries are a series of packages built specifically for extending TFS functionality. For on-premises users, we recommend using Client Libraries, Windows Auth, or Personal Access Tokens (PATs) to authenticate on behalf of a user.
Authenticate your web app users for REST API access, so your app doesn't continue to ask for usernames and passwords. Azure DevOps Services uses the OAuth 2.0 protocol to authorize your app for a user and generate an access token. Use this token when you call the REST APIs from your app.
First, register your web app and get an app ID from Azure DevOps Services. Using that app ID, send your users to Azure DevOps Services to authorize your app to access their organizations. Next, use that authorization to get an access token for that user. When you call Azure DevOps Services APIs for that user, use that user's access token. Access tokens expire, so refresh the access token if it's expired.

<h2>Register your app</h2>
Go to https://app.vsaex.visualstudio.com/app/register to register your app.
Make sure you select the scopes that your application needs, and then use the same scopes when you authorize your app. If you registered your app using the preview APIs, re-register because the scopes that you used are now deprecated.
When Azure DevOps Services presents the authorization approval page to your user, it uses your company name, app name, and descriptions. It also uses the URLs for your company web site, app website, and terms of service and privacy statements.

When Azure DevOps Services asks for a user's authorization, and the user grants it, the user's browser gets redirected to your authorization callback URL with the authorization code. The callback URL must be a secure connection (https) to transfer the code back to the app. It must exactly match the URL registered in your app. If it doesn't, a 400 error page is displayed instead of a page asking the user to grant authorization to your app.
When you register your app, the application settings page displays.

Call the authorization URL and pass your app ID and authorized scopes when you want to have a user authorize your app to access their organization. Call the access token URL when you want to get an access token to call an Azure DevOps Services REST API.

If your user hasn't yet authorized your app to access their organization, call the authorization URL.

Azure DevOps Services asks your user to authorize your app. It handles authentication, and then calls you back with an authorization code, if the user approves the authorization.
Add a link or button to your site that navigates the user to the Azure DevOps Services authorization endpoint:

Register your app and use scopes to indicate which permissions in Azure DevOps Services that your app requires. When your users authorize your app to access their organization, they authorize it for those scopes. Requesting the authorization passes the same scopes that you registered.

<h3>Q: Can I use OAuth with my mobile phone app?</h3>
A: No. Azure DevOps Services only supports the web server flow, so there's no way to implement OAuth, as you can't securely store the app secret.
<h3>Q: What errors or special conditions do I need to handle in my code?</h3>
A: Make sure that you handle the following conditions:
<ul>
<li>If your user denies your app access, no authorization code gets returned. Don't use the authorization code without checking for denial.</li>
<li>If your user revokes your app's authorization, the access token is no longer valid. When your app uses the token to access data, a 401 error returns. Request authorization again.</li>

<h3>Q: I want to debug my web app locally. Can I use localhost for the callback URL when I register my app?</h3>
A: Yes. Azure DevOps Services now allows localhost in your callback URL. Ensure you use https://localhost as the beginning of your callback URL when you register your app.
<h3>Q: I get an HTTP 400 error when I try to get an access token. What might be wrong?</h3>
A: Check that you set the content type to application/x-www-form-urlencoded in your request header.
<h3>Q: Can I use OAuth with the SOAP endpoints and REST APIs?</h3>
A: No. OAuth is only supported in the REST APIs at this point.

To get started, launch the URL and create a free account as shown below. Once the account is created you can start by creating projects.

Click on MyFirstProject and this will open up the project page for you. This is very similar to TFS which we saw earlier in my earlier tutorials. However, the user interface though is a bit different.

Click on the Dashboards menu. 
Since VSTS is meant to be a platform for the entire project team to work and collaborate together with the initial activities that need to be performed which is to add all the team members to work on the project.

Under Team Members, the right click on Invite a friend and add all the other VSTS accounts created by the team.

Search all the VSTS accounts created by the team and Add them to the project just created. Save changes once done.

<h3>Create User Story and Task</h3>
As in my earlier tutorials, we will start by creating User stories and link Tasks to it. The tasks will typically need to be assigned to the developers for them to link to the code changes.
These User Stories and Tasks will need to be added to the Sprint cycle from a project planning perspective.
Using the Work menu select Queries => New => User Story

Enter a title and update the other fields to the User Story. Save the User Story once all the fields are updated.

To create a Task work item and link to User Story select New => Task

<h3>Open the Project in Visual Studio</h3>
To start developing the User Story you will need Visual Studio.NET 2015/2017 installed on your local machine. The source code will need to be shared with the TFVC repo. Click on Open in Visual Studio.

In this tutorial, we learned how to get started with Microsoft VSTS which is a cloud ALM platform for the entire project team where absolutely no infrastructure is required to manage the entire platform in order to store all your project related artifacts which include Work Items, Source Code, define Build and Release Definitions.
This was meant only to be an introduction to the platform.
In my upcoming tutorial, I will extend to showcase how DevOps (CI/CD) can be done using VSTS using Azure as the cloud portal for deployment.

Troubleshooting application problems are difficult. It takes a lot of time. I would argue that it might be the thing that we developers spend most of our time on in the cycle вЂ“ write some code вЂ“ F5 вЂ“ find out why it didnвЂ™t work вЂ“ fix вЂ“ F5вЂ¦. And thatвЂ™s just troubleshooting locally on your own machine. When your application is in production, it is even more difficult to find out what went wrong. This review covers how to access the various types of Azure logging. Learn where to find logs for your application, IIS, Failed Request Tracing, and others.
Traditionally, you could RDP into the server and open up the app logs, IIS logs or look at the event logs to get a hint of what went wrong. But where can you find that information if you are running your app in the cloud? Things are different in the cloud вЂ“ there may not be a server to log into.

<h2>Why Logging is Different in the Cloud</h2>
The cloud is different from traditional hosting environments when you use Platform-as-a-Services (PaaS) services, like Azure App Services:

Suppose you are hosting a web application. In вЂњtraditionalвЂќ web hosting, you would have a server that runs an Operating System (OS) like Windows or Linux and runs a webserver to host your application, like IIS or Apache Tomcat. You as a developer would be responsible for the application, but sometimes also for parts of the OS and the webserver. For instance, for making sure that the right IIS modules are installed, or setting the correct access rights on an application pool. This also means that you can log in to the server using RDP and troubleshoot.
When you host your application in the cloud, letвЂ™s say with Azure App Services, things are different. There are still servers in a datacenter that run your application; you just canвЂ™t вЂњtouchвЂќ them anymore, which is a good thing. Azure runs a magical abstraction piece called the Azure Service Fabric. This is the magic that abstracts server resources for you and makes sure that when a server fails, your app keeps running on another server. It also takes care of things like scaling the underlying resources. You just manage a Web App, which is simply a container that runs your application. The Web App has settings similar to those of a web server like IIS or Tomcat and thatвЂ™s all you have to deal with вЂ“ the application and the Web App.
This takes away the need to worry about the server and the OS, but it also takes away the ability to look into the underlying resources for troubleshooting. Luckily, Azure provides lots of tools to troubleshoot your application. In this post, weвЂ™ll look at the diagnostic logs that Azure provides.
<h2>Types of Azure Logs</h2>
Web Apps are a part of the Azure App Services offering. As are API Apps, Mobile Apps, Function Apps (that contain one or more Azure Functions) and some say Logic Apps are also part of App Services. Visit my Pluralsight course for an introduction to Azure App Services.
All of the App Services share a lot of features, including diagnostics features, like the diagnostics logs. The illustration below shows which types of diagnostics logs are available:

<li>Application logging (tracing) <ul>
<li>This log contains information about the application running in the Web App, including <ul>
<li>Trace information you write from your application</li>
<li>Other information from, for instance, ASP.NET, like uncaught Exceptions</li>
</ul>
</li>
<li>You can indicate the logging level: Error, Warning, Information or Verbose</li>
</ul>
</li>
<li>Web server logging <ul>
<li>Information about the HTTP requests that are processed by the webserver. These are very similar to the default IIS logs</li>
</ul>
</li>
<li>Detailed error messages <ul>
<li>Detailed information about HTTP status codes that indicate failures in your Web App</li>
</ul>
</li>
<li>Failed request tracing <ul>
<li>Specific information about requests to your Web App that fail. These contain all information of a failed request, including all of the IIS steps and modules the request went through</li>
</ul>
</li>
</ul>

Basically, these logs can be categorized as being part of server or application logging:

<h2>Turing Diagnostics Logging On</h2>
You can turn on the diagnostics logs from the Azure Portal or from Azure PowerShell (using the Set-AzureWebsite cmdlet). LetвЂ™s look at how it is done from the Azure Portal:

In the options of an App Service, like a Web App, there is the menu item Diagnostics logs, which opens the blade that you see in the previous illustration. Here, you can turn on the different logs and specify some options:
<ul>
<li>Enable Application logging <ul>
<li>Save the logs to the filesystem. This setting will only stay enabled for 12 hours</li>
<li>You can also save the logs to Azure Blob Storage, even if you also save the logs to the file system</li>
<li>Additionally, you can specify a verbosity level for the application logging to catch. This allows you to filter the logging information captured to Error, Warning, Information or Verbose. The Verbose value will catch all information that you log</li>
</ul>
</li>
<li>Enable Web server logging <ul>
<li>You can save the logs to either the filesystem or to Azure Blob Storage</li>
<li>If you save to the filesystem<ul>
<li>You can optionally enter a maximum size for the log files (the Quota)</li>
<li>You can optionally enter a number of days that web server logs should be retained. By default, web server logs are retained indefinitely</li>
</ul>
</li>
</ul>
</li>
<li>Enable Detailed Error messages <ul>
<li>These are saved to the filesystem by default</li>
</ul>
</li>
<li>Enable Failed request tracing <ul>
<li>These are also saved to the filesystem by default</li>
</ul>
</li>
</ul>

<h3>Filesystem</h3>
So we can save diagnostics logs to the filesystem. But which filesystem? App Services can have multiple instances and the resources that run them can be replaced at any time (if a VM fails, a new one will pick up the workload). Therefore, the filesystem canвЂ™t be something that lives вЂњinвЂќ the Web App. And it isnвЂ™t. It is a bit of Azure Storage that is associated with the App Service and runs outside of the App Service process. The App Service just has this storage вЂњmountedвЂќ as its filesystem. This is the place where diagnostic logs can be saved and also the place where the files of your application (your deployment) are stored.
<h2>Finding the Diagnostics Logs</h2>
Now that the diagnostics logs are enabled, we can see them and analyze them. There are many ways to access the diagnostics logs, including through FTP. LetвЂ™s go through the ones that I use most.
Streaming Azure Logs to Visual Studio
In the Azure Portal, but also in Visual Studio, you can see a stream of the logs. In Visual Studio, you can access the streaming logs from the Cloud Explorer, when you enter the context-menu of an App Service, like a Web App:

This opens the streaming logs in Visual StudioвЂ™s output window, where all the logs will be displayed:

You can see all logs in the streaming logs window, except for the Failed Request Tracing Logs. This is because these are logged in XML format, and the stream canвЂ™t deal with that.
Logs in the Filesystem
You can also just look at the logs through the filesystem, or in Azure Storage if you store the logs there. The filesystem is accessible through FTP, PowerShell, Azure CLI, Kudu, but also through the Cloud Explorer in Visual Studio:

<li>W3SVC#### вЂ“ Failed request trace logs</li>
<li>eventlog.xml вЂ“ This is not really a log type that you enable, but it is the accumulation of all of the events that occur, just like the Windows Event Log.</li>
</ul>

You can open these logs from the Cloud Explorer and analyze them right there.
<h2>Analyzing the Diagnostics Logs</h2>
So what is in these logs? Here are some examples:
Application Logging 
Application logging contains just that: application logging. This logs everything that you write out with System.Diagnostics.Trace, like Trace.WriteLine(вЂњMy messageвЂќ);. These logs come in .txt format and also contain any generic information that your application spits out, like uncaught exceptions, so these Azure trace logs are valuable.
Detailed Error Messages
The name is a bit misleading because there is not a lot of detail in these logs. The logs capture any HTTP code that indicates failure, like HTTP 500 (Internal Server Error) or HTTP 400 (Bad Request). These logs come in .htm format and look like this:

Failed Request Tracing
These logs are very, very detailed. Too detailed for most usage. But if you need to go deep and want to inspect every aspect of the lifecycle of a failed HTTP request, then this is the log you are looking for. They come in .xml format that has a special schema (freb.xsl). When you open them in Internet Explorer (from a directory that also contains the freb.xsl file), they look like this:

Web Server Logging
These logs contain the raw HTTP data, just like normal IIS logs. They contain each HTTP request in detail, the browser agent information, and the IP address of the requestor. Your Azure IIS logs come in .log format and look like this:

These logs can help you to troubleshoot your application, but which log types can you use best in which situation? The illustration below provides some high-level guidance:

<h2>Conclusion on Azure Logging</h2>
Log files are useful and even when you are running in Azure, you have plenty of options to get information from log files.
It is difficult to get information from log files as you need to aggregate them and somehow analyze them. These are difficult problems that will slow you down when you are bug-hunting an issue in production.
I recommend using tools that visualize the information that is contained in your Azure logs. You do not have to enable the logs for this specifically as most of these tools capture this information automatically. Tools like Application Insights, Stackify Retrace or New Relic enable you to get an overview of the health of all your applications, including information that is contained in the log files and more. Using tools like these also enable you to be notified of exceptions so that you can go bug-hunting proactively.
